So we’re mad crazy excited to announce that we’re throwing an intimate New Year’s Eve bash for our nearest and dearest at one of London’s most beautiful hidden gems – The Yard Theatre in Hackney Wick. It’s only ever been used for parties once or twice in the past.

We’ll be bringing in the New Year with a Cher’s-own-brand blend of sound systems, strawberry smoke, Danish hygge, and bespoke visuals.

Janus is the God of beginnings and transitions, and so also of endings, doors, gates and time.

Traditionally he is depicted as having two faces – one looking forwards and one backwards.

Please honour him on the night and invite good luck into 2013 by bringing a mask with you. It wouldn’t be a New Year’s party without a bit of ritual after all…

We did an interview with all-round lovely chap and Chicago house legend Cajmere a while back for our bruders over at iCrates. About time we posted it for your perusal.

How did you get into music to begin with and what did you see as your first big break?

When I was younger, music was always around. My father was a DJ and he used to play a lot of funk, jazz and blues. So, my earliest memories of music were of Sly Stone, James Brown, Parliament, B.B. King. When I became a teenager, I went to college to do chemical engineering. After some internships, I just felt it wasn’t my calling. I started trying to be a music producer around the late ‘80s and began releasing tracks in the early ‘90s on Hula and DJ Fingers’ label, Clubhouse. The ‘Underground Goodies’ series with them definitely got me some attention. I then wrote Lidell Townsell’s ‘Get With U’, which was the first song I could live off for a couple of months.

How would you describe Cajmere’s early sound and what was the underground scene like in Chicago in the early 90′s?

With my early sound, I wanted to make sure that what I was doing stayed true to the early Chicago house tradition. I really loved the stuff that was coming out in the ‘80s in the city so I wanted to keep that vibe. A lot of people had moved on to hip hop by that time, which became a mainstream scene. House went more underground – there were a lot of warehouse parties. It was fun, it was great, off the chart! Shelter, Medusa’s, La Mirage, AKAs. Even Ron Hardy played at some of those places during his later years DJ-ing.

How has the scene changed over the last 20 years?

The scene is definitely more global. Back in the day, everyone talked about Chicago, Detroit, London, Italy. Now it is truly worldwide. You get DJs and producers emerging from everywhere.

Was the label a natural progression or more of a conscious move into the business side of the music industry?

The label was something I was kind of forced into. I really didn’t have any desire to do a label. The main reason I started it was because it was the only way I could continue to put out the type of music I wanted to release. With Clubhouse, Hula and Fingers had started to become really successful in the pop arena with DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince and others, so the underground house side became less of a priority for them.

Strut are now releasing a Cajual records retrospective. It’s clear that an entirely new generation have discovered your records all over again. Why do you think that is?

House ain’t gonna stop, it’ll keep reaching for the top! House music is truly about having fun, a good time. It’s about dancing, it’s about love. You can’t really find that in that many other music genres. Also, a lot of the kids’ parents used to listen to the stuff so, it’s like they are now experiencing it for themselves.

What’s your personal favourite record that you put out during the 1990s?

‘Brighter Days’, for sure. There were so many great different versions. Louie Vega, Todd Terry, the ‘Underground Goodies’ version, which is probably still my favourite. That original version got a lot of play in Chicago at the time.

You re-released ‘Percolator’ in 2010 and ‘Brighter Days’ digitally last year with entirely new remixes. You must have been keeping the master recordings in mint condition?

Yeah, I do. My library is in good order!

You worked a lot with Derrick Carter in the past – are you still in touch? How often do you bump into people like Chez Damier and Ron Trent (who started their Prescription label in the Cajual office)?

Derrick is Derrick. He’s cool and fun. I knew him from working at Gramaphone and, when I started Cajual, I got Derrick to do promotions and Spencer (Kincy) to do distribution. Us three DJs doing everything. We’re still in contact – he’s a great guy.

What’s Mark Grant up to these days? He hasn’t put a new record out for a while – his vocal mix of ‘Only 4 U’ still dominates dancefloors.

Mark is my buddy. We always talk about him and me going and hanging out – he makes the best guacamole, y’know! I tried to call him just recently but I’m not sure what his plans are for music right now.

Who are some of the more recent house music producers that you admire? Is there anyone you would like to collaborate with in future?

I love Jamie Jones, man – been doing loads of stuff with him. Maceo Plex, Maya Jane Coles, Seth Troxler. Probably the same people EVERYONE wants to collaborate with, right? But I just love them.

How do you feel about America’s new obsession with “EDM”? It’s strange that so few people seem to have realised that it’s been around on their doorsteps in Chicago, New York, and Detroit for more than two decades now.

The truth is that electronic music has always been kinda popular here in the US – it was just happening underground. During the ‘90s, we used to have huge raves with tens of thousands of people. Now, the government is a bit more accepting to the scene because rock has kinda died out. The only way people can make money from live music is through having these electronic festivals. It has become more acceptable and people are more able to push it on a bigger scale than before. So, we gotta thank rock for dying out!

What, for you, sets the Chicago house sound apart from that in Detroit?

Well, I’d say there are lots of differences in influences and attitude but one of the main differences is probably the equipment – a lot of producers in Chicago used the 303 while Detroit was on the 606 and other synth sounds and samplers.

What are your plans for the future?

Continuing to make good music and meet great people, have fun and spread love!

Cher DJs will be taking over Room 2 at East Village in London tomorrow evening at Wolfstock. Tevo Howard and Kate Simko are headlining as part of their Polyrhythmic collab.
